Privacy policy
Your records are yours
What DayBoat collects, why, and what you can do about it. Last updated 4 November 2026.
In short
- We collect only what the app needs to log your catch and send your returns.
- No adverts, no tracking and no selling your data.
- Your GPS position never leaves your phone. Only the fishing area you choose is saved.
- A return goes to your IFCA only when you send it.
Who we are
DayBoat is made by Kernow Software Ltd, which is the data controller for the personal data described here. You can reach us through the contact form.
What we collect and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in with a one-time code sent to it, as the reply address on your returns so the IFCA’s answer comes back to you, and to find your account if you contact us. |
| Your name | To put on your returns. |
| Your phone’s name and type (for example “iPhone”) | To keep each phone’s sign-in separate, so you can sign one out without the others. |
| Your boat’s details (name, PLN, home port, permit number, IFCA) | To fill in your returns. |
| Your trips and catch (date, area code, gear, pots, soak time, bait, species, weights and numbers) | To keep your catch log and build your monthly returns. |
| Your signature | To sign your returns. It is kept on your phone and added to the return when you send it. |
| Certificates you add, with expiry dates, and any photos or PDFs you attach | To show you what’s expired or due, and to keep the documents on every phone on the boat so they open at sea. |
| Who is on which boat | So owners and skippers on the same boat see the same records. |
| Returns you’ve sent, and when | So you can see what was sent and avoid sending a month twice. |
| Your boat’s subscription (plan, renewal date and Apple’s transaction record) | To unlock the paid features for the boat. We never see your card details. |
Our lawful basis is that we need this data to provide the app you’ve asked for (contract). Sending a return is something you choose to do each time.
Location
When you press “Where am I”, DayBoat uses your phone’s GPS to suggest your ICES box. The position is used on the phone only and never sent to us. Only the area code you choose is saved with the trip. You can say no to location and pick your box by hand.
Tides and wind
To show tides and wind, the app asks our server for the forecast at the tide station you’ve chosen. That is a fixed public station, not where you are. Our server fetches the tide times from the UK Hydrographic Office and the wind from the Met Office; neither receives anything about you or your boat.
What we don’t collect
No advertising identifiers, no tracking across other apps or websites, no contacts, no health or financial data. We don’t sell or rent your data to anyone.
Who we share it with
- Your IFCA, only when you send a return: the return itself, with your name, boat, signature and email.
- Other people on your boat: the owners and skippers you share the boat with see its trips, returns and certificates.
- Service providers who run parts of DayBoat for us and may only use the data to do so: Amazon Web Services (our servers, in London) and Postmark (sending sign-in codes and returns by email). Some of these may process data outside the UK; where they do, it is protected by the safeguards UK law requires.
- Apple or Google, if you subscribe: they handle the payment. We receive a record of the subscription, never your card details.
We’ll also share data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while you have an account. Sign-in codes expire after a few minutes. If you delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep something by law. Records on a boat you share stay with the other people on that boat. Returns already sent are held by the IFCA under its own privacy notice.
Security
Data travels between the app and our servers over an encrypted connection. Sign-in is by a one-time code, and each phone has its own session that you can end by signing out.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or ask us to restrict it. Use the contact form. To delete your account, see Delete your account.
If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
DayBoat is for commercial fishermen and isn’t meant for children under 16.
Changes
If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change matters.
