Help with DayBoat

Straight answers to the questions fishermen ask most. If yours isn’t here, send us a message and a real person will reply.

Getting started

How do I sign in?

With your email address. DayBoat emails you a six-digit code; type it in and you’re signed in. There’s no password to remember.

How do I set up my boat?

After signing in, add your boat’s name, PLN, home port, permit number and which IFCA you report to. You can change any of it later in Settings.

Can the owner and the skipper both use it?

Yes. Everyone on the same boat sees the same trips, returns and certificates, whoever logged them.

Which phones does it work on?

iPhone first. It’s being tested now and will be on the App Store soon; Android is on the way.

Trips & the map

What happens if I have no signal at sea?

Nothing is lost. Every trip saves on the phone first and sends itself when you’re back in signal. A small icon shows on any trip that hasn’t been sent yet.

How do I choose my area?

Tap your ICES rectangle and sub-box on the map, or press “Where am I” to let GPS find it. Then choose your distance from shore. DayBoat remembers your usual area.

Does DayBoat track where I go?

No. GPS is only used on the phone, when you press “Where am I”, to suggest your box. Your position is never sent anywhere; only the area code you choose is saved with the trip.

Can I fix a trip after I’ve logged it?

Yes. Open the trip from the Catch tab, change it and save. Changes sync like any other trip.

Where do the tides and wind come from?

Tide times come from the UK Hydrographic Office (ADMIRALTY) for your nearest tide station, and the wind from the Met Office, hour by hour for the next two days. They download when you have signal, so they’re there at sea. They’re predictions and not for navigation: always check the inshore waters forecast.

Monthly returns

Which IFCAs can I send returns to?

Cornwall IFCA (the Monthly Shellfish Statistics form) and North Western IFCA (Category One crab and lobster, and whelk permit returns). Others are on the way; tell us which one you need.

How does a return get sent?

DayBoat fills in your IFCA’s form from that month’s trips. You check it, sign it once on your phone and press send. We email it to the IFCA with your email as the reply address, so their answer comes straight back to you.

The return says something is missing. What do I do?

Tap the warning. DayBoat takes you to the trip that needs it, such as pots hauled, soak time, bait, or cocks and hens, so you can fill it in and come back.

I didn’t fish this month. Do I still send a return?

Most IFCAs want a nil return. DayBoat handles nil months: choose the reason and send it the same way.

Is DayBoat part of the IFCA or the MMO?

No. DayBoat is an independent app. It fills in and sends the forms the IFCAs already ask for, but it isn’t run by, or connected to, any IFCA or the Marine Management Organisation. You stay responsible for what your return says, so check it before you sign.

Paying

How much does DayBoat cost?

It’s free while it’s being tested. When it launches, the catch log stays free, and one subscription per boat (£2.99 a month or £29.99 a year, with the first two months free) adds sending returns, unlimited certificates and sharing the boat.

How do I cancel?

Through your App Store or Google Play subscriptions, at any time. Nothing is deleted when a subscription ends: your trips and certificates stay readable, and only sending returns stops until you restart it.

Delete your account

To delete your DayBoat account, send us a message using the form below and choose “Delete my account”. Send it from, or include, the email address you sign in with so we can find your account. We’ll confirm by email before anything is removed.

We then delete your account, your sign-in details, your signature and the trips and certificates only you could see, within 30 days. If you share a boat with someone else, that boat’s records stay with them. Copies of returns already sent to an IFCA are held by the IFCA, not by us. See the privacy policy for the details.
